York Regional Forest walk examines invasive species

Residents are invited to lace up their hiking shoes and explore the York Regional Forest during guided walking tours at Porritt Tract in Whitchurch-Stouffville on Aug. 18 and 19 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Nature’s Invaders walk is for participants ages 10 and older, who will learn about invasive plants, insects and diseases that threaten the region’s forests and local ecosystems.

The free guided walks are open to residents and visitors, whether attending solo or with family, and offer an opportunity to enjoy nature while learning about forest conservation.

For more than a century, York Regional Forest has continued to grow and thrive. Today, it spans more than 2,600 hectares across 24 forest tracts, features more than 50 tree species and provides habitat for a wide variety of native wildlife.

“This walk offers a unique opportunity to connect with the land and gain important knowledge to preserve our natural heritage,” says James Lane, Manager, Natural Heritage and Forestry Services.

Registration opens July 18.
