The Fortune Ball raises $760,000 to support exceptional patient care
Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH) Foundation hosted over 600 guests on Nov. 23 at the third annual The Fortune Ball presented by TD. Held at the Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites, the evening featured exquisite cuisine, world-class entertainment, and a vibrant celebration of Chinese-Canadian culture — all in support of Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital.
Since its inception, The Fortune Ball has brought together the community to celebrate cultural pride and support essential health care initiatives at MSH. CP24 Breakfast host Jennifer Hsiung returned as emcee, guiding the festivities alongside a distinguished lineup of artists and entertainers. Guests were captivated by the rhythmic energy of Wushu Project’s dragon and lion dances and Quisha Wint’s soulful performances that lit up the room.
Founding members of MSH Foundation’s Fortune Leadership Council (FLC) returned as co-chairs for this year’s gala. Alan Kwong, David Ho, Gordon Chan, Kenny Wan and Stephen Li, all distinguished members, lead the FLC – an assembly of local Chinese business leaders with a shared mission to give back to the hospital. MSH Foundation is honoured to partner with leaders of the local Chinese-Canadian community to inspire more Chinese business and philanthropic leaders to bring abundant blessings to MSH through the sharing of their good fortune and prosperity.
“Events like The Fortune Ball showcase the strength of our community and ensure Markham Stouffville Hospital can continue delivering exceptional care to every patient who walks through their doors,” said Stephen Li, co-chair and MSH Foundation board director. “Together, we are building a healthier future for generations to come.”
Access to state-of-the-art equipment is essential for MSH to continue providing the exceptional, patient-centred care the community needs and deserves. The urgent and evolving needs in surgery, diagnostic imaging, and emergency medicine are constantly changing as our community is expanding and aging through the years.
During the evening, grateful patient family member Florence Lai shared a deeply moving account of her family’s experiences at MSH. Her family found comfort through the compassionate care the hospital team provided. Her father spent time in palliative care following his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, and her father-in-law and mother-in-law spent months in the hospital before they passed this summer. “When you are at Markham Stouffville Hospital, you feel supported and cared for. It’s a place where you don’t need to be afraid, no matter what you are facing,” said Lai. “The staff, nurses, and volunteers have such caring hearts, and we need to support them in return because we will all benefit in the end.”
The extraordinary generosity of sponsors, donors, and volunteers ensures MSH remains at the forefront of patient care. Thanks to the community’s unwavering support, this year’s The Fortune Ball raised over $760,000 to advance critical health care services and technology. Together, we will bring a lifetime of care close to home.
