Stouffville to create Cultural Hub on Main Street
The Town of Stouffville will create a Cultural Hub complete with holiday lighting displays and a selfie station after receiving a $188,000 grant from the My Main Street Community Activator program.
“By investing in our historic village, we will support a long-term sustainable strategy to spur economic activity, draw visitors, and increase local vibrancy and social cohesion,” says Mayor Iain Lovatt. “This project will not only enhance the beauty of our public spaces but also foster a deeper sense of belonging and connection within our community.”
The hub, to be created on Main Street and at Civic Square, will feature interactive light activations, including a selfie station with illuminated wings and a photo-friendly swing. Working in partnership with STEPS Public Art, two new murals will also be installed in the coming weeks: a wall mural at 6242 Main St. and a ground mural along the Sculpture Walk. The program also supported the 2024 Patio Series at 19 on the Park, which featured free, live performances throughout the summer.
The My Main Street Community Activator provides support for community projects in southern Ontario designed to draw visitors and increase local vibrancy. The program supports high-impact placemaking projects that seek to revitalize neighbourhoods and reimagine public spaces including main streets, downtown strips and plazas as vibrant and inclusive places that work for everyone.
My Main Street is delivered by the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI), and supported by a Government of Canada investment through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario). Learn more about the My Main Street program at mymainstreet.ca.
“Main streets are at the social and economic heart of community life in cities and towns across southern Ontario,” says CUI CEO and President Mary W. Rowe. “The enhancements the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville are implementing on Main Street will not only attract visitors and increase foot traffic, but will contribute to our collective infrastructure, strengthening our downtown cores as vibrant and inclusive places for everyone.”
Project updates will be posted at townofws.ca/culturalhub.
