Stouffville launches speed cameras
The Town of Stouffville has officially launched its Community Safety Camera Program using Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) technology in a bid to improve road safety and encourage drivers to adhere to speed limits.
The program is specifically focused on areas with “vulnerable populations,” such as school zones and community safety zones, the Town notes.
Here’s a list of the ASE camera locations: Hoover Park Drive (eastbound) east of Sandiford Drive, Hoover Park Drive (eastbound) east of Kribs Drive, Hoover Park Drive (westbound) west of Jacob Way, Baker Hill Boulevard (northbound) south of Boadway Crescent, Millard Street (eastbound) west of John Davis Gate, Millard Street (westbound) east of Braith Crescent, Main Street (eastbound) west of Pine Street and Main Street (westbound) east of Spring Street.
In November, ‘Coming Soon’ signs were installed at all eight council-approved locations where the speed cameras were mounted on poles. As of March 17, those cameras will be active and operational.
“Designed to increase speed compliance, alter driver behaviour and reinforce the importance of adhering to speed limits, the ASE program is an important step in protecting Stouffville’s most vulnerable road users,” the Town says. “Studies have demonstrated that ASE is an effective tool in reducing vehicle speeds, improving driver awareness, and decreasing pedestrian injuries and fatalities.”
The Province of Ontario has set standardized fines for ASE-detected speeding violations under Ontario Regulation 355/22: one to 19 kilometres (km) per hour (h) over – $5 per km; 20 to 29 km/h over – $7.50 per km; 30 to 49 km/h over – $12 per km; 50 km/h or more over – $19.50 per km.
The penalties will also be subject to a Victim’s Justice Fee and the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario Search Fee. Tickets will be issued through the Administrative Monetary Penalty System and mailed to the registered vehicle owner within 30 days of the offence. Penalties include a monetary fine but don’t result in demerit points or impact insurance premiums. Learn more about the payment or appeal process at the Town’s Safety Camera Penalties page.
“Stouffville’s Community Safety Camera Program works alongside other traffic control measures, including education, enforcement and engineering, to reduce speeding and enhance safety for all road users,” the Town says. “The revenue generated will help cover program costs and support other safety initiatives in the Town.”
The ASE system operates by using a camera and speed sensor to detect speeding vehicles. If a vehicle exceeds the speed limit, the system automatically captures an image of the vehicle. A Provincial Offences Officer then reviews the image, and if confirmed, a ticket is issued by mail. The Town will never issue tickets or request payment by phone, email or text message.
