Matters of the Heart: A Pulse on Cardiac Care speaker series

Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation will host the Healthy. Together. Speaker Series — Matters of the Heart: A Pulse on Cardiac Care — at The Bridge community church (Ninth Line, just north of 16th Avenue).

Experts Dr. Shruti Tandon (cardiologist) and Andy Zhou (nurse practitioner) of Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH) will take the stage in an in-depth discussion moderated by Pauline Chan of CTV News Toronto. Dr. Tandon joined the Cardiology department of MSH in 2017; her practice focuses on general cardiology and non-invasive imaging, with a special interest in women’s health and cardio-oncology. Mr. Zhou joined MSH in 2019 and specializes in attending to patients requiring cardiac care, and plans an effective, holistic path to recovery. Together, they will discuss the hospital’s growing Cardiology program and services, leading-edge interventions, specialized clinics and the latest preventive cardiac care information.

“The integrated care we provide at MSH is collaborative, holistic, and patient-centred. The team includes physicians, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, registered dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and pharmacists, to name a few,” Dr. Tandon says. “We all work together to educate our patients on how they can be proactive and improve their heart health.”

The volume of cardiac patients at MSH has risen by 32 per cent since 2019, and projections indicate that the hospital could serve a population close to 500,000 by 2030. MSH’s plans to advance patient-centred cardiac services reflect the needs of our growing community. Oak Valley Health is working towards a Level 4 Cardiac Program status through a collaboration with Unity Health Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital to enhance overall access and open new pathways to timely cardiac care. This partnership will strengthen the hospital’s efforts to deliver comprehensive, first-class care close to home while supporting the development of upgraded cardiac services, mentorship, education, and training of staff and physicians.

Enhancing MSH’s Level 2 Coronary Care Unit is one of the plans to expand Oak Valley Health’s cardiac department. The government can’t fund all the hospital’s priority needs, so support from the community is critical—without generous donor support, upgrades like this would not be possible.

“As a nurse practitioner, I am a registered nurse who has obtained additional education and training, enabling me to diagnose conditions, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe medications. I collaborate with cardiologists and interdisciplinary professionals to deliver patient-centered care,” says Mr. Zhou. “Join us on March 31 to learn how patients can proactively safeguard their cardiac health from every angle.”

Don’t miss your chance to learn about the hospital’s services, trends, and preventative measures for your heart health. Registration is free and includes complimentary refreshments. Reserve your spot at the March 31 at 5:30 p.m. speaker series event by visiting mshf.on.ca/events.
