Mosquito tested for West Nile virus in Stouffville

York Region Public Health has confirmed that a mosquito trap near Highway 48 and Aurora Road in Stouffville has tested positive for West Nile virus.

West Nile virus is an infection that can be spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. There are currently no confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Stouffville.

York Region Public Health is conducting an environmental scan within a two-kilometre radius of the positive mosquito trap. The scan will focus on identifying and treating standing water containing mosquito larvae on public property, including catch basins, ditches, parks, stormwater management ponds, field pools, sewage lagoons and other areas where water may collect.

Residents can help reduce the risk of mosquito bites and West Nile virus by removing standing water around your home. To avoid mosquitos use an insect repellent containing DEET and wear light-coloured clothing, including long-sleeved shirts and pants, particularly during times when mosquitoes are most active.

As part of its 2026 West Nile Virus Control Plan, York Region Public Health applies larvicides to catch basins and other stagnant public water sources, monitors mosquitoes for West Nile virus each week and investigates reported human cases.
