Sleepy Hollow team to compete nationally

A local golf team is set to compete on the national stage this fall.

Comprised of Jason Sikrtanc, Andrew McIntyre, Chris Mero, Tyler King, and PGA Pro Matt Hillhouse, the Sleepy Hollow Golf & Country Club team is aiming to win a Canadian National Championship.

Earlier this week, the team secured victory at the Greater Toronto RBC PGA Scramble Final, held at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley, which will also be the venue for the 2025 RBC Canadian Open next June. Their impressive performance placed them ahead of 23 other teams, earning them a spot in the national final at the renowned Cabot Links Golf Course in Inverness, Nova Scotia, scheduled for early October.

“Honestly, we are feeling over the moon right now,” said Hillhouse. “We had a little bit of a cold stretch, but Chris came up big for the team on the last hole. He was like our team Dad out there and made a 30-foot putt on our last hole to get it done for us. We celebrated there, and we thought, you know, we might be able to hold on. Sometimes things work in your favour, and we did it.”

The team earned their spot in the 18-hole RBC PGA Scramble regional tournament by winning the local qualifier event at Sleepy Hollow Golf & Country Club earlier this summer. The scramble format of the tournament factors in each golfer’s handicap when calculating the final score, allowing any golfer with a registered Golf Canada handicap to participate and potentially win.

In October, the team will compete against other teams from across the country in the national final.

“I tried to light some fire under the team this week,” said Hillhouse. “I’ve been showing them photos and videos of the last time I was at Cabot in 2021. To say the least, these guys have been so excited all week long. One of the guys was up at six in the morning because he couldn’t sleep all night and was in the backyard on his farm hitting balls into the woods trying to get loose. I’m so excited for them to see it and I’m so fortunate to go back.”
