New software to help address surgical backlogs

Markham Stouffville Hospital is adopting surgical wait list management software that promises to provide “timelier access to surgery” for patients.

“Over the last few years, the surgical system has been challenged with closures due to the pandemic,” says Erin Landry, Patient Care Director of Surgical Service, Access & Flow, Staffing Office at Markham Souffville Hospital of Oak Valley Health.

“This software will allow us to address surgical backlogs, manage prioritization of cases and provide higher quality, transparent data. Together, these improvements will provide timelier access to surgery for our patients,” she says of the Novari Health ATC surgical wait list management, pre-operative readiness, eBooking and provincial wait times reporting system.

Since 2018, Oak Valley Health – along with regional partner hospitals that include Southlake Regional Health Centre, Mackenzie Health, North York General Hospital and Humber River Hospital – have used Novari eRequest referral management software to manage thousands of patients referred for hip and knee replacements. The use of this made-in-Ontario technology will be expanded to include additional orthopedic referrals.

The Novari ATC system, which will be integrated with Oak Valley Health’s Meditech electronic health record system, will allow surgeons and their office staff to electronically schedule surgeries and procedures with the hospital. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Ontario Health are financially supporting the implementation of the system in a bid to reduce surgical wait times.
