Markham Little Theatre returns with a mystery
Markham Little Theatre returns to the Flato Markham Theatre stage for the first time this season with A Murder is Announced. Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple returns to MLT in this murder mystery running from November 20th to 23rd at 8pm (with a 2pm matinee on the 23rd).
“MLT is the hidden gem of Markham,” says company president Judy Atherton. “Our high-quality shows make staying in Markham a great alternative to going downtown for a night out.”
This next MLT show is actually more than a simple murder mystery, it becomes a story of redemption set against post-war muddle and discomfort. A Murder is Announced revolves around a curious notice in the local paper, which hints at a murder that’s yet to occur; on Friday the 13th nonetheless. As curious villagers gather at the appointed time, they soon realise that the announcement was a prelude to a real-life murder.
“Murder mysteries have been a staple here (at MLT) because they captivate audiences in a unique way,” says the show’s director, Corrine Engelbrecht. “A Murder is Announced is a fantastic continuation of this tradition because it has everything—a mix of humour, a touch of romance, the ever-enigmatic Miss Marple, and plenty of suspense.”
The cast is a plentiful mix of seasoned MLT veterans and newcomers. At 13 strong, it’s one of MLT’s larger groups. Taking the lead is Michèle Browne as Miss Marple who’s been a part of the company for five decades. She’s joined by veterans Catherine Hughes, Judy Atherton, and John Fetherston as well as newcomers Rhonda Upshaw, Emily Lawther, and Gaia Martin del Fresno. The cast is rounded out by Jaime Oren, Andrew Pawarroo, David Haddad, and longtime MLT set-builder Phillip Mitchel.
“The energy has been amazing,” says Engelbrecht. “Everyone brings something unique to the table. Their passion is truly impressive.”
“It’s such a great mix of new faces and long time favourites,” says Atherton
“The very first play I helped with was another Agatha Christie, Mousetrap, back in 2019,” adds Stage Manager Cathy Ingram. “Working with a group of friends towards a common goal is a great experience.”
It’s these shared ‘great’ experiences that inform the current company members. MLT had its first production at the local high school in 1967 and it’s become a volunteer army of theatre creators that is almost unmatched across Ontario. This connection makes its way onstage too.
“The themes of family and community really stand out to me,” says Engelbrecht. “Despite the many differences between the characters, we see them come together to solve the mystery, showcasing a sense of unity and support that feels very relevant.”
“MLT members are like a big family; always welcoming new people to join our troop,” adds producer Peggy Wyatt.
Given the chance to persuade folks to come see their show, their answers are immediate.
“There is a murderer among us,” offers Atherton.
“Come and solve this murder mystery with us,” says Wyatt
“Don’t read the book first,” adds Ingram, “see if you can figure it out before Miss Marple.”
Finally, the last word goes to the show’s director.
“In true Agatha Christie fashion, this play will keep you on the edge of your seat with its twists and turns,” says Engelbrecht, “but you’ll also find yourself laughing and caring for these quirky, endearing characters.”
A Murder is Announced will be presented at Flato Markham Theatre from November 20th to 23rd.
All shows begin at 8:00pm, except for a matinee on the 23rd at 2pm, with ticket prices starting at $29
