Public board approves strategic plan

Student achievement, health and well-being, and human rights and inclusive education.

Those are the three priorities of the York Region District School Board’s (YRDSB) newly-approved Multi-Year Strategic Plan, which guides its direction and work.

Developed by the Board of Trustees and based on feedback from staff, students and community, its theme is Building Unity, Achieving Excellence and focuses on bringing together school communities in support of student success.

“This Multi-Year Strategic Plan sets out clear priorities that will guide the work of our system in the years ahead,” says Director of Education Bill Cober. “The plan has a clear focus on the achievement and well-being of all students, and the essential role that staff and community play in advancing student success.”

Student achievement focuses on promoting and supporting high expectations for all by providing high quality instruction for all learners, supporting sustainable professional development and meaningful learning for staff, integrating foundational skills across subject areas in ways that honour all pathways and centering students as co-leaders of their growth and development.

Health and well-being focuses on building healthy environments and positive relationships by building positive relationships and connections to promote feelings of mattering and belonging, supporting the mental and physical health of students and staff, and creating safe and healthy environments to support teaching, learning and development.

Human rights and inclusivity focus on learning and growing together, and affirming diverse identities by celebrating and affirming diverse identities and communities, upholding and advancing distinct Indigenous rights, advancing equity for students and staff facing systemic barriers, and building partnerships that serve students and families while providing opportunities for community engagement.

“We are grateful to the many students, staff and community members who shared their input and helped us to develop a Multi-Year Strategic Plan that reflects the community we serve,” says Board Chair Ron Lynn. “This plan will help to ensure we continue to deliver high-quality education and remain a leader in public education.”
