Hearts in Motion gala supports accessible programs
Steer Friends Day Program (SF) is hosting its inaugural Hearts in Motion black-tie fundraising gala to support the creation of a new, modern, and accessible facility for individuals with developmental disabilities and complex care needs. The event will take place on February 21 at 6 p.m. at the Crystal Fountain Event Venue in Markham.
Funds raised will enable SF to expand its programs, which include music therapy, sensory-based learning, pet therapy, art expression, culinary experiences, challenger baseball, and community outings. These initiatives aim to foster well-being, personal growth, and social inclusion for participants.
Guests at the gala can look forward to a fantastic evening featuring a four-course meal prepared by Crystal Fountain’s culinary team, live entertainment, and presentations from SF staff and families. There will also be silent and live auctions with items such as Toronto Maple Leafs tickets, a Bancroft cabin getaway, gift baskets from local businesses, and fine dining gift cards.
Executive director Jacqueline Hall-Fusco emphasized the critical role SF plays in the community: “Steer Friends isn’t just a program, it’s a lifeline for families and a place where individuals with disabilities can thrive. This event helps us grow our capacity to serve more people, offering the opportunities for personal growth, social connection and independence. By donating, you’re not only changing lives, you’re building a stronger, more inclusive community.”
Parent Chantelle Sanderson shared her experience of SF’s impact on her family, including her 22-year-old daughter Jenna, who has cerebral palsy: “As parents, my husband and I are so pleased with the environment and programing that we see at Steer Friends. One of the hardest things to see is the loneliness that people with disabilities experience, but a program like Steer Friends changes that for us as a family. They support Jenna, but they support us as parents too.”
Jenna Sanderson echoed this sentiment, expressing her appreciation for the care and attention she receives: “I love being at Steer Friends. I know that it’s not easy for people to understand me. My speech is soft and can be difficult for people to hear clearly, but I have so many thoughts I love to share. The staff at Steer Friends take time to listen to me and know me. I feel like I have a voice there.” Sanderson says SF is (like) a home and is thankful to be a part of the Steer Family.
