‘Breaking down barriers’ to addiction care
Addiction Services Central Ontario (ASCO) has launched a Mobile Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (M-RAAM) clinic to provide barrier-free, street-side treatment and supports for those affected by addictions.
Funded by Ontario Health, the mobile clinic serves York Region and South Simcoe, and offers addictions medicine, counselling, case management and harm reduction support.
“York Region and South Simcoe residents now have more timely access to the addiction services they need, no matter where they live,” says ASCO Executive Director Penny Marrett. “The introduction of the M-RAAM clinic makes addiction services more accessible and equitable for underserved communities.”
The mobile unit is staffed by a team of professionals, including a Nurse Practitioner, Registered Practical Nurse, case manager, addiction counsellor and peer support. Clients can speak directly with an addiction professional about their recovery journey, receive advice on treatment options and learn about services available to them.
ASCO has been providing community treatment services, support and assistance to individuals experiencing substance use and/or problem gambling and their loved ones since 1983. It embraces a holistic, biological, psychological, social and spiritual approach to addiction. Its vision is to create a world in which all people affected by addictions have the opportunity to heal.
“As a trusted provider of addiction services for over 40 years, ASCO is committed to breaking down barriers to care,” Marrett notes. “We are grateful to Ontario Health for their support in making this initiative a reality. The launch of this mobile clinic will allow us to expand our reach, bringing vital support directly to those who may not have had access otherwise, ensuring that no one is left behind in their path to recovery.”
