York Region budget earns financial Triple Crown

York Region’s 2024 budget has earned an international award that it has received for 20 consecutive years. It also earned a Triple Crown medallion.

“York Region has a longstanding history of delivering high quality services in a financially prudent manner,” York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson says of the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

Founded in 1906, GOFA represents public finance officials throughout Canada and the U.S. Its award programs recognize excellence in government finance. The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award recognizes the Region’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting and publishing budget documents that satisfy national guidelines.

The budget also received Special Recognition for Strategic Goals and Strategies. Special Recognition is awarded when all three independent reviewers rate the budget document as “outstanding” in a specific area.

That’s not all. Earlier this year, the Region was awarded the Triple Crown medallion by the GFOA in recognition of receiving all three GFOA awards for the 2022 fiscal year: the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting, Distinguished Budget Presentation Award and Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award.

“Receipt of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for 20 consecutive years reflects the Region’s ongoing commitment to excellence in budgeting,” says King Township Mayor Steve Pellegrini, Chair of the Region’s Finance and Administration. “This award, along with the Triple Crown medallion, represents a significant accomplishment in delivering high quality financial documents.”
