Town plans to reopen leisure facilities

If you’ve been missing the gym, you’re sure to be pumped by the town’s plans to reopen its leisure facilities in early April.

“This is great news for everyone,” Whitchurch-Stouffville Mayor Iain Lovatt said. “Stouffville’s COVID-19 situation is improving, especially with the recent shift to the Red Control Zone. “We need to get our facilities open for everyone to enjoy.”

Town Council voted on March 16 to bring back 19 full-time leisure staff members who were temporarily laid off in January. Part-time staff will also return to work in preparation for the re-openings, which will be in keeping with all provincial and municipal health and safety guidelines.

“We have had many residents inquire about when they can get back to the gym, the pool, the theatre and the museum,” Lovatt said. “We couldn’t be happier to get the doors open again.”

The town had forecasted an $800,000 shortfall in 2021 due to COVID-19 induced economic pressures.  However, recent emergency funding under the Province’s Safe Restart Agreement provided the Town with $1.3 million in grants.
