Town of Stouffville plans to transform parking lot into an urban plaza

By David Yin, Local Journalism Initiative reporter

The Town of Stouffville has begun preliminary work to convert a downtown parking lot into a new urban plaza, with completion scheduled for next summer.

Riley Rogers, a landscape architecture student at the University of Guelph, provided his conceptual design as part of his professional portfolio. His plan noted that over half of Stouffville’s population lives within 5 km of Main Street.

The urban plaza – to be located at the south part of 6240 Main Street – will feature modular seating, picnic-style tables, games and activity spaces, and a performance shed to allow shelter for local performers and community events.

The plan also ensured that the urban plaza would complement the adjacent mural by Julia Prajza on 6242 Main St.

“The goal is to create a welcoming, people-focused public space designed to support community connection, local businesses, and cultural programming,” said Glenn Jackson, Stouffville’s communication manager.

The town will develop seasonal programming and partnership opportunities to ensure the outdoor venue remains actively used, especially during summer and fall.
