Take a hike with TRCA this fall

From adult nature walks to a frightening hike around the forest, there are lots of ways to enjoy Mother Nature with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) this fall.

On Monday, Oct. 21, an experienced pole walking leader will guide participants through everything they need to know about pole walking in nature and navigating uneven terrain. Walking poles will be provided.

Pole Walking 101 takes place at Kortright Centre for Conservation, 9550 Pine Valley Dr. in Vaughan from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $2 for adults aged 55 plus and $10 for adults under 55. Register here. On Thursday, Oct. 17, Saving Seeds teaches you how to save seeds from native species and what they need to survive from storage to propagation. Discover the many native plant species of Southern Ontario on this guided hike as you forage for some seeds to examine and take home to plant in your own garden. The free event takes place at Rouge Woods Community Centre at 110 Shirley Dr. in Richmond Hill from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Register here. On Sunday, Oct. 27 and Tuesday, Oct. 29, those aged 10 years and older are invited to enjoy Halloween Haunts and Howls at Bruce’s Mill Conservation Park Nature Centre. Enjoy a frightening hike around the forest, supernatural story time, pumpkin carving and spooky treats. Participants are encouraged to wear a costume. The event takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the centre at 3291 Stouffville Rd. in Stouffville. The event is $15 plus HST for adults and $12 plus HST for seniors. Register here

On Sunday, Nov. 3, adults and older teens can take part in a five-hour retreat. Naturally Mindful: Silent Retreat in Nature begins with a gentle yoga class followed by various guided mindfulness mediation practices, including forest bathing, a sitting mediation and walking mediation. It takes place at the Kortright Centre for Conservation from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $89.99 plus HST per participant. Register here. On Wednesday, Nov. 13, take part in Rain to Runoff: A Stormwater Story and follow the journey of stormwater runoff from roads and parking lots to waterways. In this free Zoom session, participants will learn about the impacts of stormwater in a changing climate and discover how to take action to protect drinking water, wildlife habitat and more.

The event, which takes place from 6:30 to 8 p.m., is intended for children ages six years and older, youth and adults. Teachers can attend a 15-minute question-and-answer period following the presentation to learn how to deliver the program to their students. Register here.
