Stouffville community comes together to celebrate Tamil Heritage Month
The Stouffville Tamils’ Association hosted its 14th Annual Tamil Heritage Month Celebration on January 30 at Stouffville District Secondary School, showcasing the richness and vibrancy of Tamil arts and culture. The evening featured captivating vocal and instrumental music, inspiring speeches, and engaging drama performances that reflected the depth of Tamil heritage.
More than 600 community members attended the celebration, along with distinguished guests including the Mayor of Stouffville, town councillors, and representatives from Markham Stouffville Hospital, the Stouffville Chamber of Commerce, the Stouffville Fire Department, the Stouffville Lions Club, and the York Region District School Board.
Sivan Ilangko, president of the Stouffville Tamils’ Association, emphasized that the objective of the celebration is to pass on Tamil culture to the next generation while sharing it with the broader community. He also spoke about Thirukkural, one of the oldest Tamil literary works, written over 2,000 years ago. Ilangko noted that the text outlines principles of life through three sections—virtue, wealth, and love—and has been translated into more than 40 languages. He highlighted that the first complete English translation of Thirukkural was done by Canadian scholar G.U. Pope, who was born in Prince Edward Island in 1820.
Mayor Iain Lovatt and other local leaders addressed the audience and congratulated the organizers for hosting a successful and meaningful celebration.
The event also highlighted ongoing efforts by the Canadian Tamil community to build a Tamil Community Centre in Scarborough, with support from the provincial and federal governments and the City of Toronto. In support of this initiative, two ceremonial cheques were presented during the event: a $25,000 donation from Mr. Thass Shanmugalingam and a $10,000 donation from the Vasan Family, representing the Law Office of Laxmi Vasan and Vasan Law Professional Corporation.
