Police Appreciation Night marks 30th anniversary

York Regional Police (YRP) marked the 30th anniversary of Police Appreciation Night, which raised $1.2 million for the event’s beneficiaries, the York Region Centre for Community Safety and Victim Services of York Region.

The annual event has transformed from a humble awards banquet to one of the most important fundraisers for community safety programs in York Region.

“A heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated to Police Appreciation Night,” YRP Chief Jim MacSween said. “These funds ensure our community partners can continue their invaluable, important work supporting victims of crime and other tragic circumstance in our region.”

During Police Appreciation Night, YRP members – both sworn and civilian – are recognized for their outstanding work. Each award winner has exemplified the YRP values of professionalism, courage, compassion, fairness and respect, and has gone above and beyond the call of duty in their service to the community, the service reports.

“This year’s award winners include officers who exemplified a great deal of bravery, even in challenging circumstances, and members who have made a lasting, positive impact on the community through their volunteer endeavours,” said MacSween. “They have each embodied the service’s motto: Deeds Speak and have set the bar high for their fellow colleagues.”

This year’s award winners include Project Crystal Investigative Team – Professionalism in Policing Award; Project Glaceport Investigative Team- Professionalism in Policing Award; Vaughan Home Invasion Investigation – Garrett Styles Bravery in the Line of Duty; Detective Constable Dan Banks – Rob Plunkett Outstanding Service to the Community; Staff Sergeant Josh McCue – Herbert H.
