Orchestrating integrated care through lifelong learning

At Oak Valley Health, dedication to education is central to delivering top-quality care and attracting talented health care professionals. This year, the hospital’s annual Academic Week, September 23-27, reflects that commitment, focusing on the theme “Lifelong Learning in Healthcare: Advancing skills and knowledge across the lifespan,” which underscores the need for collaborative, multidisciplinary care to improve patient outcomes. Embedding continuous learning into everything the team does creates an environment that nurtures growth and strengthens the hospital’s ability to recruit and retain exceptional health care professionals.

The health care field is rapidly evolving, with new technologies, treatments, and research continuously reshaping how patients are cared for. To stay ahead, Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH) prioritizes ongoing education, offering staff opportunities to enhance their skills and advance professionally. This approach fosters a culture of innovation and ensures that staff are prepared to stay on the pulse of modern health care.

“We know that investing in education is investing in our people, investing in our community and investing in the future of patient care,” says Tracie Scott, Director of Interprofessional Education and Practice at Oak Valley Health. “Academic Week is a key initiative that equips our professionals with the knowledge and tools they need to excel while also supporting their career development and celebrating their successes.”

From a variety of enriching activities, including workshops, masterclasses, a keynote presentation on the vital role of teaching in health care, and a Patient and Family Education Fair, the Academic Week showcases the organization’s commitment to partnering with patients, families and the broader community to enhance health literacy. The fair includes experts from both the hospital and community partner organizations. It underscores the importance of empowering patients and their families to take an active role in their health care journey through a collaborative approach to treatment and care. By building partnerships and supporting health literacy, Oak Valley Health strives to improve outcomes and ensure the community is well-equipped to make informed health decisions.

In an increasingly competitive health care landscape, providing robust educational opportunities is essential to attracting top talent. Prospective employees are drawn to organizations that prioritize professional development and continuous learning. By highlighting its educational initiatives through Academic Week, the hospital strives to position itself as an employer of choice for those seeking to advance their careers while contributing to high-quality patient care.

Through the integration of education into its People Plan, which stems from the larger organizational Strategic Plan, the hospital ensures that new hires have access to ongoing learning opportunities. From mentorship programs to partnerships with academic institutions and certification courses, staff are empowered to grow and stay at the forefront of their fields.

Lifelong learning allows staff to explore new areas of interest, preventing burnout and keeping them energized about their work. By embedding education and opportunity for development into every stage of an employee’s journey, MSH creates an environment where people want to stay and grow.

By fostering an environment where learning is a priority, Oak Valley Health not only enhances the skills of its team but also builds a foundation for collaborative, integrated care that benefits its staff and the patients they serve.
