New YRDSB chair wants to ‘build bridges’

Newly-elected York Region District School Board (YRDSB) chairman Allan Tam will lead the board in 2022 as it develops a multi-year plan that identifies its goals.

“There has never been a more important time than now to build relationships with students and their families,” Tam says. “With all we’ve gone through these past years, this is the time to develop connections and make a difference.

The multi-year plan “will be a reflection of emergent priorities” identified by our communities.

This is where relationships matter; where we build bridges with community,” Tam says.

Tam replaces Past Chair Cynthia Cordova.

Since first elected trustee for Markham Wards 4 and 5 in 2010, the Hong Kong-born and Toronto-raised computer technology professional has held numerous roles, including chair of the budget committee and most recently vice-chair.

Ron Lynn

Ron Lynn, trustee for Markham Wards 2, 3 and 6, was elected vice chair at the board’s inaugural meeting, which was held December 6. David Sherman was elected chair of the finance and property standing committee, Cindy Liang was elected chair of the learning, equity and well-being standing committee, and Bob McRoberts was elected chair of the policy and bylaw standing committee.

YRDSB is the third largest school district in Ontario. It has more than 125,000 students in 180 elementary schools and 33 secondary schools.
