Mosquitoes in Markham test positive for West Nile virus

Residents are advised to remove mosquito-friendly areas from their homes after two local mosquito traps tested positive for West Nile virus.

A mosquito trap at Kennedy Road and 16th Avenue in Markham and a second trap at Jane Street and Hwy. 7 in Vaughan are the first positive traps of the year, York Region reports.

It advises residents to clean up stagnant water found in bird baths, flowerpots, swimming pool covers and clogged eavestroughs. Also, ensure the window screens on your home fit tightly and are in good repair.

The region also advises protecting yourself outside by using insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin and wearing light-coloured protective clothing, including pants and long-sleeved shirts.

York Region Public Health uses larvicides in catch basins to control mosquito breeding along Regional and municipal roads and other stagnant public water sources, including roadside ditches. Private backyard catch basins are treated upon request.

West Nile virus can be passed to humans if an infected mosquito bites them. While most people infected with the virus don’t get ill, those who do may experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, muscle weakness, confusion, stiff neck and severe headache or severe illness. Seek medical attention if you experience any of those symptoms.
