Latcham presents the art of Anthony Gebrehiwot

Latcham Art Centre’s winter exhibition showcases the remarkable art of Anthony Gebrehiwot. This special exhibition features new work by the Scarborough-based photographer and artist.

Gebrehiwot’s exhibition asks, “What would life feel like without clocks or calendars—outside of the relentless current of time?”

Drawing on Afrofuturism, a cultural movement that blends science, art, and technology with historical African aesthetics, Gebrehiwot’s photographs and digital collages present imaginative worlds where Afro-diasporic subjects are liberated from colonial structures of identity and time, unbound from the ticking clock.

Many of his photo-based works are produced collaboratively with textile artists, craftspeople, hairstylists, and makeup artists to create otherworldly images that radiate intimacy and emotion. The layering of past, present, and future at play in these images acts as a bridge between physical and spiritual realms, inspiring a collective reimagining of Black futures.

The exhibition unfolds across three bodies of work: Gebrehiwot’s Veilscapes (inspired by works of the same name by American artist, Delita Martin) transform the gallery into a layered visual experience; the MAHABA series portrays bold shamanic figures manifesting futures while recalling ancestral histories; and a collection of digital collages evoke dimensions beyond human perception.

Anthony Gebrehiwot’s exhibition, Beyond the Veil of Time: Bridging Black Temporalities, runs from January 17 until February 28 at Latcham Art Centre at 2 Park Drive. Latcham welcomes everyone to the exhibition to celebrate arts and culture during Black History Month. Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in art!
