Job Fair opens doors for youth careers
As summer approaches and internship opportunities for recent and soon-to-be graduates become more pressing, a new initiative by a youth-led volunteer group may help anxious young people relieve some pressure.
On March 9, at Markham Hilton Suites Conference Centre (8500 Warden Ave at Highway #7), The New Youth Volunteering Association, a well-established youth-led group that has supported several community causes, is itself opening the doors to jobs for young people.
New Youth originated as a loose group of young volunteers who parlayed their own volunteer hours required in high school into a burgeoning organization that now boasts hundreds of high school and college-aged youth who support others fulfilling their required volunteer hours. However, group members often stay past the required hours, sometimes into the hundreds of hours, to support any number of non-profit community groups.
In this case, New Youth has created the Career Development Conference, assembling up to 30 participating sponsor businesses in one place for the benefit of the estimated 300-500 students looking for a foot into the job world. The event, billed as a half seminar and half job fair, aims to equip students with practical job-seeking skills, networking opportunities, and local businesses with capable young stars, says New Youth founder and event organizer Nemo Cui. “For businesses, this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your organization, connect with potential customers, recruit summer workers or recent graduates for internships, and build collaborative relationships with other companies…this event offers a unique platform for businesses to expand their reach and make a direct impact on the next generation of talent”.

Cui also notes that there will be “inspirational speakers” from company HR leads and business executives who will provide a “backstage pass to make meaningful connections”.
The event is on March 9 and runs from 1-4 pm. Businesses that want to register as sponsors or find great student workers can register by email at thenewyouth2018@gmail.com or by calling 647-989-9530.
Students can register for the event by scanning the QR code and submitting the online form.
