Former police chief is new York Region chair
Former York Regional Police (YRP) Chief Eric Jolliffe is York Region’s new chair and CEO, replacing retired chair and CEO Wayne Emmerson.
“I am honoured to serve our community in this new capacity and I look forward to collaborating with council members, staff and residents to build upon the Region’s strengths and address the important work that lies ahead,” says Jolliffe.
He was appointed to the role by the provincial government. “Together, we will strive to enhance the quality of life for all our residents and ensure our Region remains a vibrant and prosperous place to live, work and raise a family,” he adds.
Jolliffe will be responsible for overseeing York’s strategic direction, working closely with council members to address key issues facing the Region. “Mr. Jolliffe’s extensive experience in leadership and public service will be invaluable as we work together to enhance economic prosperity, support community well-being and drive sustainable development across the Region,” says Paul Calandra, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
Jolliffe was born and raised in York Region and brings more than 40 years of service to his new role. As Chief of Police from 2010 to 2020, he led an organization responsible for the safety of 1.2 million residents with more than 2,000 employees and managed operational and capital budgets in the neighbourhood of $400 million.
He received numerous accolades over the span of his policing career, including the Governor General’s Order of Merit of the Police and both the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond and Golden Jubilee Medals. Under his leadership, YRP received national recognition as a Top Employer for Young People and consistently ranked among the Greater Toronto Area’s Top 100 Employers.
In addition to supporting shelters like the Yellow Brick House, Jolliffe supported initiatives like the Holiday Heroes campaign, which helped more than 3,000 families annually, and championed mental health initiatives both internally and externally, the Region reports.
“Eric Jolliffe’s appointment as the new Chair of York Region is a testament to his exceptional leadership and deep commitment to our community,” said Erin Mahoney, CAO of The Regional Municipality of York. “His extensive experience and proven track record in public service will undoubtedly contribute to the continued growth and prosperity of York Region, and we look forward to supporting his vision for our future.”
