YR report highlights court technology updates

York Region Court and Tribunal Services 2022 annual report showcases the advancements made to the courts’ system, allowing for improvements to its organizational structure, modernized operations supporting timely access to justice and efficiency.

“We continue to evolve Court and Tribunal Services, providing those who access our services with options to make their experiences timely and as smooth as possible,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “The pandemic further fast-tracked our efforts to advance technology, enabling virtual court appearances and online payment options.”

Initiatives in the 2022 annual report include:

  • Upgrading courtrooms with remote hearing capabilities, allowing participants the option of attending court virtually or in-person
  • Expanding fine payment options, including accepting payment over the phone, in addition to online, mail and in-person
  • Finalizing the 2023-2026 Court and Tribunal Services Action Plan which identifies key actions by Legal and Court Services in support of the Region’s Strategic Plan

York Region’s Provincial Offences Court provides administrative services to more than 30 law enforcement and regulatory agencies. All municipal Provincial Offences Act matters, including parking, bylaw, building and fire code offences, are administered and prosecuted by York Region.

“York Region’s Court and Tribunal Services continues to make great progress in operational efficiency and improving the court user’s experience,” said Township of King Mayor Steve Pellegrini, Chair of York Region’s Finance and Administration. “The 2022 Annual Report delivers a broad overview of the current and future services York Region provides to the justice system.”

In 2022, more than 85,000 people accessed Court and Tribunal Services either in-person or by telephone. Approximately 41,000 court users were assisted online with their inquiries.
