York Region Transit marks 25 years of service
York Region Transit (YRT) 25th anniversary celebrations kicked off March 5 when York Regional Council showcased a specially-wrapped bus and a display of YRT archives and memorabilia.
When YRT was established in 2001, it merged the transit systems of the Cities of Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan and the Towns of Aurora and Newmarket, creating a unified network across the Region.
Today, it provides services that include Viva rapid transit, local, express and School Special routes, as well as on-request and door-to-door paratransit services. It provides transit services to 1.29 million residents. Since amalgamation in 2001, YRT ridership has increased more than 30 per cent, from 7.7 million to 24.7 million in 2024, York Region reports.
YRT will host special events, displays and contests to mark the milestone over the next several months. For more information on YRT’s 25th anniversary, visit yrt.ca/Celebrate25. Be sure to check back regularly for updates on upcoming events.
