Stouffville Main Street 5K gets bigger and better

It was a perfect morning for a run. And run, over 1,300 people did on a glorious Father’s Day bringing together families from Stouffville and surrounding communities for the second annual Stouffville Main Street 5K. The Town of Stouffville and the Office of Mayor Iain Lovatt held the event with Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH) as the chosen beneficiary and raised $113,245 as of race day. But that total will certainly be eclipsed as donations are still being accepted until July 1, 2024.

The Stouffville Main Street 5K is an annual family walk/run held on Father’s Day for both recreational and competitive participants. The purpose of the event is to bring awareness to the services that MSH offers to the Stouffville community and raise funds for the hospital. “After the overwhelming success of our first walk/run in 2023, I am thrilled that it is now an annual event, raising much needed funds for our hospital, the Markham Stouffville Hospital,” says Mayor Lovatt.

“Generous community support is essential for Markham Stouffville Hospital to be able to remain on the cutting-edge of patient care,” says Suzette Strong, CEO, MSH Foundation. “Our hospital can only thrive with the help of the caring spirit of its community. Thank you to Mayor Lovatt, Council, and the Stouffville community for bringing a lifetime of care close to home.”

While many took the opportunity to have a casual walk down the main drag with family and friends, others took a more competitive approach. The most exuberant competition might have been the kids 1k, which brought a boisterous throng up and down Park Drive.

In the competitive adult group, Mike Wan of Markham, who runs with the Stouffville Run Club was the overall winner with a time of 17:00. Caroline Ash, of Newmarket, was the first female and eighth overall at 18:13.

If you missed the event and still want to support the event and hospital, donations are still being accepted until July 1 and can be made online at https://raceroster.com/events/2024/85023/stouffville-main-street-5k
