Violence against women has increased by 30 per cent during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Community support to operate the two Yellow Brick House (YBH) shelters in York Region, the 24/7 crisis support line and community counselling and supportive services to help women and children survive domestic abuse, is needed now more than ever.
“The statistics are alarming,” YBH executive director Lorris Herenda said. “But behind the statistics are real stories of women and children escaping domestic violence and who rely on Yellow Brick House services like shelter, legal court support, counselling and crisis intervention.
“Our virtual gala is an opportunity for everyone to participate free of charge and for those who are able to donate, we are counting on your generosity to help us meet our goal so that we can support every woman and child that reaches out to us.”
The hour-long May 6 event — sponsored by The Talent Company — will be filled with stories of survival. It will also include music by award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Jully Black and Layne The Auctionista will entertain everyone as they bid on auction items from the comfort of their own home.
Registration is free at https://trellis.org/2022-virtual-gala. VIP Bags are available for purchase, and you can take part in the silent auction.
