With monetary donations down and food security at an all-time high, the Food Bank of York Region (FBYR) has turned to a new way of raising funds to continue supporting its most vulnerable food insecure residents.
The FBYR is hosting its first ever 50-50 draw, which runs until Jan. 1. The lucky winner’s name will be drawn and announced on Jan. 2.
“Food insecurity is rising in York Region, and we need to respond in every way possible to keep up with the demand,” says Alex Bilotta, founder and CEO of the Food Bank of York Region. “Monetary donation support received from our community champions help us continue growing our programs and services and help us keep up with the increasing demand for food support. We’re facing the highest inflation rates we’ve seen in 40 years, and we’re hoping for the community’s support of our 50-50 raffle.”
The FBYR’s most recent data report for January-November of 2022 shows 26,549 unique individuals being served, with 33 per cent being children and seniors. Their network of community partners has received 147,809 visits from 8,087 households in the region. The overall numbers are up 18 per cent from 2021, and the statistics have not yet included the month of December, their busiest time of the year.
Supporting this 50-50 draw is one way to help give back to the community right where you live without ever having to leave your home. Get in the holiday spirit and purchase your 50-50 tickets today. Help spread some goodwill and cheer, and maybe even bring a little luck your own way too.
