Kindred Spirits Orchestra presents its Sounds of the Season holiday concert

The Kindred Spirits Orchestra (KSO) invites the community to gather for one of Markham’s most anticipated holiday concerts of the year, Sounds of the Season, taking place December 6 at the Markham Theatre.

Led by Maestro Kristian Alexander, with guest soloist Harrison Yang Meng (viola) and host Daniel Vnukowski, this concert promises an unforgettable evening of festive music, community connection, and giving back.

Sounds of the Season is more than a concert; it’s a celebration of community and generosity,” said Jobert Sevilleno, president and CEO of the Kindred Spirits Orchestra. “Every ticket purchased and every auction bid directly supports our mission to make orchestral music accessible, inclusive, and inspiring across the GTA. We are deeply grateful to our patrons, sponsors, and volunteers who make this annual tradition such a meaningful part of Markham’s cultural calendar.”

The program features The Beatlecracker Suite—a whimsical, one-of-a-kind mash-up of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and the beloved songs of The Beatles. This inventive work fuses the grandeur of classical music with the joyful spirit of pop culture, creating a fun and refreshing twist on a holiday classic. The evening also includes Walton’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra and Dukas’s Symphony in C, showcasing the orchestra’s brilliance, depth, and versatility.

“This year’s Sounds of the Season brings together the joy of familiar holiday classics with the thrill of musical innovation,” added Maestro Kristian Alexander, music director of the Kindred Spirits Orchestra. “The program moves from the timeless charm of Tchaikovsky and The Beatles to the emotional depth of Walton and the exuberance of Dukas. It’s an evening that celebrates the beauty of sound and the spirit of the season.”

What makes this event truly special is the silent auction in support of the arts and music education. All proceeds go directly toward funding the KSO’s community programs, youth engagement initiatives, and educational outreach. Guests can bid on exciting experiences and exclusive items such as tickets to the Royal Ontario Museum, Ripley’s Aquarium, Shaw Festival, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Raptors, and more.

The silent auction opens at 7 p.m., followed by a pre-concert talk featuring musicologist Mihaela Cubaldu and a prélude recital featuring Alexa Ball and Rostislav Thihov.

Each year, Sounds of the Season draws audiences to experience the magic of orchestral music in the heart of Markham. The concert blends tradition with artistic innovation, offering a joyful experience that unites art lovers, families, and supporters of the performing arts.
