Driven Living: Racing for rare diseases

A young race car driver, Eric Kunz, has recently launched Driven Living, a not-for-profit organization that is harnessing the power and popularity of motorsport to raise awareness and funds for rare diseases.

Kunz is also a SickKids’ Patient Ambassador and patient. He suffers from fatigue and constant chronic pain caused by an extremely rare disease known as Kaposiform Lymphangiomatosis. However, he has found that adrenaline-inducing motorsport provides relief and says, “It feels like my disease disappears as soon as the tires start to roll.”

He wants to inspire other rare disease patients with positivity, and hope, as well as raise awareness so that they know they are not alone. Kunz also plans to raise funds to support organizations that provide treatment, care and conduct research, starting with SickKids.

For the 2023 season, Kunz is racing in the FEL Motorsports Sports Car Championship Canada series, which is comprised of 12 races taking place across Ontario and Quebec. Bringing together three classes of cars—GT4, TCR, and TCA—this championship series offers a spectacular display of speed and skill on the track.

In the first two races of the season, he clinched 3rd place finishes in the TCA class. During the third race, he secured a hard-fought 4th-place position. Looking ahead, Kunz is eagerly preparing for his next challenge at the highly anticipated Honda Indy Toronto which takes place from July 14 to July 16.

“None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of Stouffville Honda,” added Kunz. They have provided incredible support to make his racing season a reality.

Stouffville Honda will showcase Kunz’s race car in their showroom from June 14 to 17. Kunz will be present at the dealership for an afternoon meet and greet session on June 17. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with him and learn more about his racing journey, his car, and his preparations for the upcoming Honda Indy Toronto. Additionally, this event aims to raise funds for SickKids.
