The Loons bring seniors together
The Loons, Toronto’s first and only walking soccer club, continues to raise awareness about the benefits of the fast-growing sport designed specifically for older adults.
Over the past three years, walking soccer has gained significant popularity as more seniors discover the fun, fitness and social connection the game provides. The club welcomes men aged 50 and older, as well as women aged 40 and older.
On May 14, The Loons hosted a walking soccer demonstration for the Milliken On The Move seniors club at the Milliken Mills Soccer Dome.
The dome was filled with local seniors enjoying the opportunity to stay active, meet new people and experience the sport in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Loons ambassador Mike Otter said he is passionate about helping more people discover the positive impact walking soccer can have on their lives.
“As an ambassador for the Loons, I want people to understand that walking soccer encourages physical activity, social interaction, and enjoyment for individuals who may not be able to participate in traditional soccer due to various reasons,” Otter said. “It provides an opportunity for older adults, individuals recovering from injuries, or those with limited mobility to engage in a team sport and benefit from the physical and social aspects of the game.”
Walking soccer follows many of the same rules as traditional soccer, but players must walk rather than run, making the sport safer and more accessible to participants of varying fitness levels and mobility. The game is also played on a smaller field, and rules are adjusted to suit the capabilities of the players.
