Walk raises funds for mobile outreach services

City Street Outreach’s (CSO) Coldest Day of the Year (CNOY) fundraiser will return for its sixth annual walk on February 28, raising funds for mobile outreach services that provide food and clothing to people in need across York Region, including Markham and Stouffville.

“The CNOY event’s theme over the years remains the same, ‘it’s cold out there.’ People understand how cold our winters can be and find it hard and sad that some are actually outside bearing the grunt of winter,” says Brian Reynolds, CNOY Stouffville event director and a CSO volunteer.

CSO is a volunteer-run registered charity that supports individuals and families experiencing homelessness or hardship by providing clothing and food. The Coldest Day of the Year campaign is led nationally by Blue Sea Foundation, a charity that facilitates fundraising events.

The family-friendly walk begins at 4 p.m. at Stouffville Pentecostal Church, where participants can register, visit sponsor and CSO information booths, enjoy children’s crafts, and hear opening remarks from CSO founder Alexander Smirnis and Reynolds, who will share event details and express gratitude to supporters.

Participants can choose between two walking routes of 2 km or 5 km. After returning, walkers are invited to enjoy coffee, treats, and food from a food truck offering burgers, hot dogs, and fries, along with time for fellowship.

Reynolds spotlights the successful growth of CNOY over the years: “The CNOY Stouffville event has grown significantly over the last few years. We have seen a large increase in the number of participants, sponsors and volunteers. More families are coming out to participate and getting involved as the reality of homelessness is increasing in our communities. More are getting engaged and want to help solve this problem.”

This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000, following a strong 2025 showing when the event raised more than $52,000.
