Hospital’s Family Room provides comfort during difficult times
When a child is seriously ill, even the simplest comforts can make a difficult hospital stay a little easier for the entire family. A quiet place to rest, a warm drink, and a shower can offer parents much-needed relief while keeping them close to their children.
That is the purpose of the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Family Room at Markham Stouffville Hospital, a welcoming retreat supported by community-minded groups such as the Fabulous 15 Circle of Champions (Fab 15).
Established in 2013 by local McDonald’s franchisees Todd and Marcia Finlayson, the Family Room is located near the hospital’s paediatric and neonatal intensive care units. It gives parents a comfortable space to recharge without being far from their child’s bedside.
For families facing an unexpected hospital stay, the experience can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Parents of newborns requiring specialized neonatal intensive care, in particular, may endure long days, interrupted sleep and constant worry. Access to a nearby place to rest, prepare something to eat or take a brief break can make a meaningful difference.
The Fabulous 15 Circle of Champions has helped bring local supporters together around a shared goal: ensuring families have access to this essential space when they need it most.
Through fundraising and community engagement, the group contributes to a broader community effort involving McDonald’s restaurant teams, customers, volunteers and donors. Their collective commitment helps sustain a resource that allows parents to focus on what matters most — being present for their children.
The initiative also demonstrates how local partnerships can make a lasting impact. Supporting health care is not always about funding medical equipment or clinical programs. Sometimes, it means creating a welcoming environment where families can find comfort, gather their strength and return to their child’s bedside.
Serving families from Markham, Stouffville and beyond, the Family Room reflects the importance of practical support during some of life’s most uncertain moments. Over the years, thousands of families have benefited from the rest and respite it provides.
The Family Room stands as a testament to the power of local generosity and compassion. The efforts of the Fabulous 15 Circle of Champions and its many donors help reinforce a simple but powerful message: families should not have to face a child’s illness alone.
Nancy Di Tomaso, a Fab 15 member, recently shared her appreciation to donors Cindy and Ross Todd.
“Cindy and Ross…they generously have donated to the RMHC Family Room at MSH over the past two years. Their donation has been the largest single amount that we have received to our campaign to date,” Di Tomaso said. “Cindy and Ross donate because they believe it is the right thing to do. They believe that when a community has been good to you, you have a responsibility to be good to that community in return.”
As Ross likes to say, every act of generosity, no matter how large or small, has the power to make a difference.
