Celebrating belonging one step at a time

As it does each year, Oak Valley Health (OVH) marked the start of Pride Month with the raising of the Intersex-Inclusive Pride flag at both Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH) and Uxbridge Hospital (UXB). Staff, physicians, volunteers, patients and community members gathered to celebrate and reflect.

This year, the celebrations included a new addition. Outside the main entrance at MSH, OVH unveiled a vibrant Pride sidewalk, transforming a well-travelled pathway into a visible symbol of support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and a reflection of the organization’s commitment to inclusion and belonging. Although it was launched during Pride Month, the sidewalk is a permanent installation that will continue to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and belonging throughout the year.

The sidewalk was spearheaded by the Pride Network, one of OVH’s Communities of Inclusion (COIs). OVH COIs are groups of individuals who share a common identity, lived experience and/or set of interests. These groups serve as a resource for members and allies, with the intent of supporting an equitable and diverse workplace and encouraging awareness, respect, and inclusion.

Brad Young and Lori Dunn, Staff and Physician Wellness Leaders and Pride Network co-chairs, are thrilled to see the project come to life.

“We’ve talked about creating something like this for years,” Young says. “Seeing it come together this year—with so many teams contributing their time, creativity and support—has been incredibly meaningful.”

The new sidewalk was put to work right away, with staff capturing selfies to show their Pride—several of which were submitted to the Pride photo contest organized by the Pride Network.

“Unveiling our Pride sidewalk at the entrance of MSH is a meaningful milestone for us all. More than a colourful addition to our front entrance, the sidewalk stands as a powerful, visible symbol of acceptance, inclusion, and allyship,” says Mark Fam, President and CEO at OVH. “It reflects our commitment to creating a welcoming space where every member of our community feels seen, valued, and celebrated.”
