A 60-year-old man has been charged with fraud after an elderly woman who met the suspect on an online dating site reported being bilked for legal services.
When the 72-year-old woman met the man in person, he told her he was a lawyer and could represent her in court regarding a legal issue she discussed with him, York Regional Police report. After handing over more than $3,000 for legal services she never received, the woman became suspicious and contacted police.
Investigators identified the suspect as Enrico Cagnotti and confirmed he was not a lawyer. They located him parked at a gas station near Ravenshoe Road and The Queensway South on June 6 but he drove over a curb and sped away when they attempted to speak with him. A warrant was issued for his arrest and, on Aug. 9, he was arrested on an unrelated matter in the City of Toronto.
Police have released the suspect’s photo because they believe there may be more victims. Enrico Cagnotti, of no fixed address, is also known as Ricardo Giambrone. He has been charged with fraud, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and three counts of breach of probation. He is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Newmarket on Sept. 12.
