Volunteers needed to help maintain outdoor rinks

Can’t wait to grab your skates and hit an outdoor skating rink again this winter? The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville hopes to build and maintain nine natural ice rinks but needs volunteers in order to make it happen.

Natural ice rinks are planned at Vandorf, Byers Pond, Greenwood, Madori, Rupert, Sunnyridge, Wheeler’s Mill, Gar Lehman and Memorial Parks. Town staff will maintain the Memorial Park rink.

Volunteers will help town staff build the rink(s) and work together to create a schedule. The town will provide the equipment and supervise and assist when possible. A group of five volunteers per rink is the optimum number to help minimize volunteer burnout and keep time commitments reasonable.

A rink won’t be built if it doesn’t have five volunteers. If you’re interested in lending a hand, provide your contact information, including address and phone number, to Shawn Norton at [email protected] by Dec. 6. Staff will contact volunteers and coordinate training sessions.
