Volunteers cook and deliver hundreds of Christmas meals annually

More than 20 years and volunteers still gladly take their time to help prepare meals for fellow residents in need of a hot Christmas Day meal.

Close to a hundred volunteers help either cook or deliver more than 400 meals with all the trimmings. They prepare the meals in the facility provided at the East Ridge Evangelical Missionary Church and have them delivered by a fleet of volunteers on Christmas Day. The complete dinners, including turkey and ham, are free and are often delivered to many living in senior’s facilities.

“It is a pleasure to play a part in this group giving back to our amazing community” said town Councillor Maurice Smith, chairperson, with his wife Jane, of the event. The group of volunteers arrive in the wee hours of the morning on Christmas and work for hours to get all the meals prepared in time.

The dinner, which also used to be a sit-down event became a delivery only service two years ago.

Though more than 10,000 meals have been cooked since the event started, Councillor Smith and the organizers would like help in identifying some of the more hidden and needy residents within our community. Local churches and the food banks likely have a better chance of knowing who is in need Councillor Smith added.

If you or your group could use this service, they will be happy to deliver Christmas dinner. Please contact the town’s Customer Service staff at 905 640 1900 and supply your name and address.
