As the hospital ramps up programs and services, Ashwin Patel has been here for the last few weeks helping people find their way to their appointments and greeting patients and visitors.

“Volunteering at Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH) has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me,” Patel said. “I’ve had the privilege to work along the remarkable staff offering patients and their family members a sense of support, comfort, and understanding in these challenging times.”

Patel’s energy, enthusiasm and commitment have made him a leader among the volunteer team.  He is now responsible for the training of new volunteer team members on how to greet and guide patients when they arrive at the hospital. Meeting new and returning volunteers every day, He never ceases to be amazed at how kind and dedicated they are.

When it comes to making sure everyone has an extraordinary patient experience, he always takes the time to get to know the patients as he helps guide through the hallways.

“One of my most memorable experiences was a patient who had fractured their leg,” he said. “The numerous thank you’s I received from this one patient alone makes volunteering at MSH worth every moment.”

Occasionally, as he gets to chatting with a new patient, Patel is asked if he is afraid of COVID-19 while he is volunteering. He makes a point of explaining that when he follows the appropriate protocols and guidelines put in place by MSH, including wearing a mask and proper hand hygiene, he knows he is protected and he is protecting others.

At the end of each shift, Patel goes home knowing he made a positive impact on the lives of people in his community. He always leaves with a smile.

MSH is looking for new volunteers to join Patel and others volunteers throughout the hospital. Volunteers are an integral part of the care team, working alongside staff and physicians to provide and extraordinary experience to patients and families.
