War veterans are invited to ride York Region Transit (YRT) for free on Warriors’ Day on Aug. 18.
Warriors’ Day was established in 1921 through the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. The 97th Warriors’ Day Parade will be held there that day to remember heroes who served in Canada’s military services.
Veterans and one companion can ride YRT for free all day without charge. Veterans can identify themselves to YRT and Mobility Plus operators by showing a uniform, medals, beret or blazer. Also, as part of the YRT Warriors’ Day service, the immediate family of a deceased veteran may ride free by carrying something that identifies their relationship to the deceased veteran, such as an identification card or service papers.
For planned service changes, major service alerts, news, travel tips and other relevant transit information, call 1-866-MOVE-YRT (668-3978), visit yrt.ca, download the YRT app available for iOS and Android or follow YRT on social media. You can also check out talk2yrt.ca, a website where you can view questions and answers about YRT or submit your own questions.
