‘Raising a fork’ to local food, farmers

Area residents were encouraged to ‘raise a fork to the food we love and the people who produce it’ on Canada’s Agriculture Day on February 11.

“York Region is home to over 700 unique farms and we know farmers take great pride in the work they do to help feed our local, national and international communities,” reports the Region, which is home to more than 140,000 acres of farmland.

The broader agri-food sector, which includes everything from farms to food processors and retailers, provides more than 57,000 jobs and contributes more than $2.7 billion to York Region’s economy. Supporting local agriculture and farms is a fresher option and saves on shipping costs.

The York Farm Fresh Map highlights farms across the region, including Reesor’s Farm Market and 19th Avenue Farmers’ Market, both in Markham, and Simpson Family Farms, King Cole Ducks and Applewood Farm Winery, all located in Stouffville. York Region council has endorsed the Agriculture and Agri-Food Sector Strategy, which outlines recommended actions to ensure that agriculture and agri-food remains a strong and viable sector in York Region. The 2020 edition of Canada’s Agriculture Day focused on strengthening the relationship between consumers and producers who share a common love and appreciation for home-grown food. It was among the top trending topics in Canada on Twitter with #CdnAgDay, with many participants posting photos of themselves raising a fork to their all-Canadian meals.

“From our farms to our grocery stores, food is a great connector for all of us,” says Debbie Bailey, spokesperson for Agriculture More Than Ever, one of the driving forces behind Canada’s Agriculture Day. “Canadians are proud of the people who grow and process their food, and they are confident we have the safest, most affordable and delicious food in the world.”
