Police officers, civilian staff receive pay hike

After working for 10 months under an expired contract, York Regional Police (YRP) officers and civilian staff will receive an annual wage hike of 2.12 per cent over a five-year agreement for a total increase of 10.6 per cent.

The recently-approved Uniform and Civilian Working Agreements with YRP Association also include a frontline response premium equivalent to other Greater Toronto Area services that will be introduced on a gradual basis beginning in 2022. Members will also receive increases to psychological benefits.

“After several months of negotiations with the YRP Association, the Police Services Board reached a fair and fiscally-responsible deal,” says Chair and East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson. “The current and future challenges as a result of COVID-19 had an impact on the negotiations and the parties agreed to defer implementation of certain changes to later in the term of the agreement and to defer associated costs as a result.”

The collective agreements between the parties expired on December 31, 2019 and the YRPA membership voted in favour of ratifying the agreements on October 16. The agreements are in keeping with other GTA services and will bring York Regional Police to parity with Toronto Police Service and Peel Regional Police. They also help avoid risks associated with interest arbitration, the Services Board reports.
