New finance director offers municipal experience

The town’s new steward of public funds is bringing nearly 25 years of experience in both the public and private sectors to the senior management post.

Jeremy Harness, Whitchurch-Stouffville’s new Director of Finance/Treasurer, worked for the Region of Durham for the past 15 years. Most recently, he has been filling two roles: Manager of Financial Services and Corporate Real Estate in the Works Department, and Project Director of the Enterprise Maintenance Management System Project.

“His impressive skillset will no doubt contribute to his leading our Finance Department to even greater success,” says CAO Rob Adams. His understanding of municipal legislation and procedures will allow for a smooth transition into our organization.” 

The Director of Finance/Treasurer reports to the CAO and provides leadership to both corporate financial management and information technology, including the development of short- and long-term strategies to support the growth and development of the community. That includes oversight of the financial aspects of the business plan and key functions related to the administration of the operating and capital budgets, accounting, taxation, insurance, procurement and information technology.

Harness completed his MBA at Wilfrid Laurier University and his professional designations include APA and CMA. He volunteers on the Board of Directors of Grandview Children’s Centre in Durham Region as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance and Facilities Committee. The family-centred pediatric and rehabilitation serves children and youth with physical, communication and developmental needs.

Harness assumes his new post on Monday, Dec. 7. He replaces Brian Parrot, who retires at the end of this year after serving as director of finance/treasurer since 2017.
