The Office of the Mayor is now accepting applications for its inaugural Mayor for the Day contest. Applications are due May 22 at 7 p.m.
Open to Whitchurch-Stouffville students in grades 5-7, the contest will give students an opportunity to share their ideas of how to make Whitchurch-Stouffville an even better place to live. Applicants will be invited to submit either an essay or a 3-minute video which will be assessed by a selection committee consisting of the town’s councillors.
The selected winner will be picked up from their school by firetruck and will spend the afternoon of June 4 with Mayor Iain Lovatt and Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville staff touring various town facilities. The Mayor for the Day winner will have the opportunity to further discuss their proposed ideas with the appropriate staff. Following dinner in the mayor’s office, the lucky winner will end their memorable day at Town Hall by opening up the 7 pm.m council meeting in the mayor’s seat.
“I’ve always been an advocate for youth engagement and I think this contest will create a great opportunity for that, says Mayor Lovatt. “I look forward to reviewing the submissions and gaining perspective from our future community leaders – I can already envision this day quickly becoming one of my favourite days of the year.”
More information and full contest details can be found at townofws.ca/mayor4theday. Written entries should not exceed 750 words and videos should not exceed three minutes.
