The grand re-opening of the newly-expanded Whitchurch-Stouffville Leisure Centre and Public Library includes a day full of festivities for the entire family.
Mark your calendar for June 2 and plan to join the fun. Check out the new fitness area, gymnasium, expanded library and the re-located Latcham Art Centre (formally Latcham Gallery).
“We are all very excited about the opening,” said Marilou Murray, Whitchurch-Stouffville leisure and community services director. “A lot of hard work, by many people, has resulted in a truly magnificent building. We honestly can’t wait.”
The renovations, the first since it opened in 2001, started in November 2016 and included a new 5,800 sq. ft. fitness centre and a 7,800 sq. ft. gymnasium added to the complex. The library added 16,000 sq. ft. to its existing footprint and the Latcham Art Centre moved into the old fitness centre from their location on Main Street.
“The day will be full of wonderful activities for the whole family,” Murray said. “We will have a number of exciting events taking place including program demonstrations, art projects, storytime drop-ins at the library and much more. Everyone is welcome.”
The facility will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Guided tours are available throughout the day in all areas of the building. Buddy the Lifeguard Dog will be onsite for visits and photos, defibrillator how-to demonstrations will take place at the pool and sporting activities will be available in the multipurpose rooms and gymnasium. Festivities at the Leisure Centre will include a free swim from 2-4 p.m.
The library will have drop-in storytimes in the children’s program room, a 3D-printer demonstration, family story walks outdoors and a South Asian Heritage Month celebration with local dance groups. Latcham Art Centre and the library will be teaming up for Book Art in the children’s program room between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Visitors can also create a mixed media literary art piece with art centre and library staff and hear all about the exciting plans the centre has for 2018.
Information about membership packages, camps and programs will be available as well as a grand opening membership special – buy two months or more and get one month free.
The official ribbon-cutting ceremony takes place at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium with many special guests along with building architects Diamond Schmitt and Percon Construction.
The Leisure Centre and Public Library will also be part of this year’s Doors Open Whitchurch-Stouffville on the same day. Doors Open is celebrating its 14th year showcasing the municipality’s historical, cultural and architecturally significant buildings and locations.
The Whitchurch-Stouffville Leisure Centre and Public Library is located at 2 Park Drive.
