Fitness centre reopens with social distancing protocols

It’s time to dust off your gym bag! The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville Fitness Centre in the Leisure Centre has re-opened its doors with new procedures and protocols under Stage 3 of the provincial government’s COVID-19 recovery plan.

Some cardio equipment has been removed to ensure there’s always two metres between patrons. Weight equipment has been appropriately spaced and the spin studio has been turned into a light exercise space to increase overall square footage.

“We are excited to safely welcome the community back into our facilities,” says Marilou Murray, Director of Leisure and Community Services. “We have taken this opening very seriously and are committed to ensuring we’re doing whatever we can so that residents feel comfortable and are excited to return to our fitness facilities.”

All equipment with porous surfaces has been removed from the fitness floor and many small pieces have been removed to ensure the facility can properly clean equipment. Group fitness programs are now offered in the gym so each patron can take part in a class in a two-metre box, each of which is spaced two metres apart from one another. The fitness centre will close frequently for regular cleaning and disinfecting wipes with a Canadian Drug Identification Number will be used.

Patrons can pay a single visit fee or purchase a temporary membership. Reservation slots are released two weeks at a time and while there are no restrictions on how many spots you can sign up for, repeated no-show reservations could result in the cancellation of your membership. If you need to cancel your reservation, you’re asked to contact the fitness centre at 905-642-7529, ext. 5319 as soon as possible.

The Whitchurch Stouffville Leisure Centre, located at 2 Park Dr., is the Town’s primary recreation facility. Learn more at www.townofws.ca/en/recreation/fitness.aspx.
