Local church members and staff embrace many changes this year — from a new incumbent to various sermon changes that ensure compliance with provincial regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Christ Church Anglican is under new leadership now that Rev. Lisa Newland started September 1. She is the first female priest to occupy the position of incumbent in the 140-year history of Christ Church.
She will deliver her first online and in-person sermons on September 6 and 13, respectively.
She is a graduate of Trinity and Wycliffe Colleges at the University of Toronto, and has served as a priest at several parishes within and outside the GTA since 2005. She was the incumbent of St. Matthew the Apostle, Oriole.
She brings a wealth of experience in parish ministry and leadership. She was previously the Regional Dean of York Mills before accepting her position at Christ Church.
She says that she is looking forward to strengthening the parish’s relationship with the surrounding community of Whitchurch-Stouffville including issues of social justice and outreach, working with parish leadership to ensure worship is an inspiring experience for people of varied backgrounds, and helping individuals and families alike nurture their relationship with God.
Her and her husband, Geoff, have moved to Stouffville in time to get their two young children enrolled in school. Locals may encounter the new residents on one of their regular walks with their Dalmatian, Willow.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic forced the church to close its doors in March, staff and parishioners have quickly adapted to new means of worship, service and fellowship.
Fortunately, from pre-recorded sermons to virtual coffee hours, what started out as experimental methods were soon embraced. Behind the scenes, staff have tirelessly been preparing for a reopening.
Now that York Region has moved into Phase 3, Christ Church is looking forward to welcoming people back to in-person worship on September 13 – with some modifications, of course.
Christ Church will be following a comprehensive reopening protocol developed by the Anglican Diocese of Toronto, which is designed to keep people safe and includes the wearing of masks and self-monitoring for COVID-19 symptoms. Church occupancy will be reduced to accommodate physical distancing and, as such, worshippers will be asked to register online before attending at the single service – Sundays at 10 a.m.
Seats will be reserved for newcomers and visitors too. Whether you are searching for a new church, haven’t been to church in a very long time or never been before, her and the rest of the church team invites you to attend and experience their vibrant community of faith.
Christ Church Stouffville Anglican is located at 254 Sunset Boulevard, just southeast of Main Street and Ninth Line.
