Calling students in Grades 5 to 7 who have ideas on how to make Whitchurch-Stouffville an “even better” place to live! The Office of the Mayor is accepting applications for its 2nd Annual Mayor for the Day contest.
The winner will be picked up from their school by firetruck on Tuesday, March 3 and will spend the afternoon with Mayor Iain Lovatt and Town staff. The winner will tour various Town facilities, can discuss their proposed ideas with appropriate staff, have dinner with the Mayor and Council and kick off that evening’s council meeting in the mayor’s seat.
“Last year we were blown away by the quality of submissions and the thoughtful suggestions from our future community leaders,” says Mayor Iain Lovatt. “Beyond that, it was an incredible exercise in youth engagement. Although there was only one winner, Gabriella Bonanno, her entire St. Mark Catholic Elementary School family celebrated her accomplishment with a mini parade on her day as mayor. It truly was one of the highlights of my year.”
Interested students can submit an essay of up to 750 words or a three-minute video, which will be assessed by a selection committee of town councillors. Applications are due Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.
